BUNKER PALACE HÔTEL 1989 French post-apocalyptic film by comics artist Enki Bilal

In an imaginary dictature of a futuristic world, rebellion has broken out. The men in power scramble to the Bunker Palace Hotel, a bunker built long ago for just this kind of contingency. But a rebel spy sneaks in, and although her nature is very quickly suspected, she is left to observe the raving of the decadent power class, who keeps wondering what happened to their leader, who has failed to show up.

This is the first film by Enki Bilal, a French-Serbian graphic novelist whole directed only three or four films over the course of 25 years. This was his first, released in 1989 and seeing the film after knowing his comic book background one can make the correlation between working in that medium and how it effects his work.

It is in the future. With the city in the midst of war, several top politicians and businesspeople have taken refuge at a hotel built in an underground bunker where they are tended by android servants. The rebels on the surface manage to obtain a key to the bunker. When their infiltrator is shot while trying to get there, Clara takes the key and enters the bunker. Arriving in the hotel, she is immediately treated with suspicion as to how she got there. The group is also puzzling over the absence of The President and other key figures. One of the group Nikolai arrives but this is a rebel infiltrator who has been surgically altered. As they wait inside the bunker, the group must put up with the worn-down and increasingly malfunctioning androids and the fact that the heating has gone off.
