Konstantin Komardin’s ‘The Idiot’ Video, Starring Cyborg Dostoyevsky

In our favorite music video of the year (so far), Russian comics artist Konstantin Komardin weaves a cyberpunk tale starring a cyborg of the dead Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky, with cameos by cyborg Alexander Pushkin and cyborg Anton Chekhov. The song is “The Idiot” (which was the title of one of Dostoyevsky’s books), and the musician is Vyacheslav Butusov, with whom we are not familiar.

Nor are we experts on Russian literature. We know this is set in a post-apocalyptic St. Petersburg, where it seems a zombie-like public are kept in place with a bunch of junk information injected into their brains (social media, cat videos, etc). A brave female scientist works to bring back Dostoyevsky, Pushkin and Chekhov in cyborg form, so that they may enlighten the people. Her lab is raided, and she manages to escape with the (defective) cyborg-Dostoyevsky. Pretty soon, cyborg-Dostoyevsky is alone and on the run, in possession of ideas that might free the people…

We’ve been fans of Komardin’s art for awhile now — the best places to see more of it are his Facebook page and his NSFW Patreon. Here’s some production art as well, though most of it doesn’t show up in the video:

An earlier configuration featured Tolstoy instead of Chekhov, and the three writers were armed.
