French comics artist Moebius made many contributions to film, most significantly as a designer. We see his handiwork in Tron, Willow, The Fifth Element and other movies for which he handled concept art or visual development. But video versions of Moebius’ own stories, many of which ran in Heavy Metal are rare. In 2003, 14 of his short tales were animated as four-minute clips and presented in batches on French TV as Arzak Rhapsody.
This is not that — it’s a sample of an 8-minute CGI film made from Moebius’ wordless story “La Planète Encore,” which is set in the world of Le Monde d’Edena. Moebius himself co-directed wit with Geoffrey Niquet, and we are sad to say that the full version is not available online. We just have these 40 seconds, from the French VFX studio BUF.
If you’re a lifelong Moebius fan, actually seeing his vehicles and characters move through his landscape and structures is a bit of a rush. While this video is in a very plain style, it is somewhat appropriate for the aesthetic of this story, which is fairly plain.
