Fans of Twin Peaks, the strange and often dark TV series that ran for 30 episodes in 1990-91, have been bursting with excitement ever since the news broke that the series was coming back, with original creators David Lynch and Mark Frost doing the driving. Here’s the video that announced the return, back in October:

Well, in a few tweets yesterday, David Lynch dashed the hopes of many a Twin Peaks fan by announcing he was dropping out of the project:

The planned Twin Peaks sequel series, which itself has not been canceled, had been notable for the commitments of its original cast members, including Kyle MacLachlan (as protagonist FBI Agent Dale Cooper), Sheryl Lee and Sherilyn Fenn. Whether those actors will stay on after Lynch’s departure, or whether the project continues at all, remains to be seen.
