There’s no need to be coy in this case: Apollonia Saintclair does some sexy pictures. Sexy, sexy pictures. Heavy Metal readers from back in the day might note that she’s in the tradition of European erotica represented by artists like Milo Manara and Guido Crepax; look back another few generations and you might land on Aubrey Beardsley, Gustav Klimt, or Egon Schiele, and observe a strong affinity with early surrealism. She’s also, quite obviously, consumed a bit of porn and fetish imagery on her artistic journey.
Feel free to fill in your own blanks, as it’s unlikely Sinclair will object—she works under a pseudonym, and for all her internet fame (she’s got a huge following on Instagram, though her first account is gone and she keeps her current one private) she prefers to let the images and their often ironic titles speak for themselves. In a 2016 interview, she explained to Dazed Digital that her work is “born of the need to enjoy myself. We all have liked books or seen films that have left us with an intense feeling of marvel. And we have in us the desire to get back into these enchanted worlds indefinitely. As the wonder unfortunately lasts a limited time, I felt the need to try to create myself such bubbles of fiction.”
Her standard biography is brief: “Ink is my blood. I draw for my own sake and for your pleasure.”
Saintclair has crowdfunded three collections of her work, and is currently selling the Ink Is My Blood Trilogy through her Bigcartel site. Her books include not just her drawings, but also commentary on them by writers she counts among her fans. Here are some sample layouts:
