Dan Fogler Launches 3 Comics With Heavy Metal: ‘Brooklyn Gladiator,’ ‘Fishkill’ & ‘Moon Lake’

Dan Fogler comes to Heavy Metal! Yes, the actor you know as Jacob Kowalski in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Luke on The Walking Dead is a huge fan of comics and Heavy Metal magazine. This summer, we’re launching three comics titles of Fogler’s Fiction — Fishkill, Brooklyn Gladiator, and Moon Lake. The first two are already available for pre-order in the Heavy Metal shop:

“There’s just a lot of surreality going on,” Fogler tells SyFy Wire. “The fact that I’m working with Heavy Metal on my comic books, some of them being an homage to Heavy Metal, with some of the artists I grew up reading. It’s just insane.”

Brooklyn Gladiator

Brooklyn Gladiator #1

Brooklyn Gladiator arrives July 1. It’s everything we love at Heavy Metal — a dystopian future (it’s set in 2033), an against-all-odds protagonist, robot intelligence run amok, a government up to nefarious tricks. Art is handled by Simon Bisley, who needs no introduction for Heavy Metal readers (but we’ll mention a few credits: Lobo, Slaine, Judge Dredd, Hellblazer.

“This is my dystopian sci-fi story,” says Fogler, who writes Brooklyn Gladiator with Andrew Harrison. “It’s an homage to Akira, which is a movie that also just blew my mind as a kid. … It’s really my Star Wars, I would say.”

Fishkill

Fishkill #1

Fishkill (co-written with Lawrence Blum) is classic hard-boiled gumshoe stuff, a crime comic starring Detective Bart Fishkill. It’s drawn by Ben Templesmith, the Eisner-nominated artist of series 30 Days of Night and Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse.

Fogler says he’s inspired by “some of my favorite movies growing up, like Chinatown and The Maltese Falcon.” You’ll see some familiar traits from characters in those films in Detective Bart. “I was like, ‘These are down and dirty guys. These are guys who are underdogs, who don’t look like it, but they may be the smartest guy in the room’ … I love a guy who gets beat up for justice. He’s looking for truth, he’s looking for justice, he gets his ass kicked and he just keeps on coming back. He’s just so stubborn, you know? I think we need more people like that in the world today.”

Both Brooklyn Gladiator and Fishkill are edited an produced by Justin Mohlman.

Moon Lake

Moon Lake‘s first issue arrives July 15, and it’s going to be a wild ride. It’s a science-fiction/fantasy/horror anthology series set in the town of Moon Lake, near the U.S.-Canada border. Fogler’s influences for this title are the 1981 Heavy Metal movie, The Twilight Zone and Tales From the Crypt. “[The town is] displaced from time. You go to Moon Lake, and it’s like this endless labyrinth/rabbit hole of crossroads of different brands of evil … Aliens, sasquatches, werewolves. It’s everything and that’s why it’s so surreal and hysterical sometimes. You have these characters working side-by-side with each other a lot.”

“Dan Fogler’s imagination and artistry surpasses my highest expectations,” Heavy Metal CEO Matthew Medney tells SyFy Wire. “When I was introduced to Dan back in October, I was blown away by the oozing creativity that engulfed the conversation we had then, and continue to have. I am beyond excited to introduce these stories as part of the Heavy Metal world and continue to grow and share Dan’s brilliant mind with the Heavy Metal Community.”
