The Gigerstein Guitar and Beyond: H.R. Giger’s Hardware for Hard Rockers

A recent film festival in New York has stirred up new interest in H.R. Giger, the late and hugely influential artist who created the look of Alien (and other films). Giger is also known for designing album covers, including that of Debbie Harry’s KooKoo. The cover was one manifestation of a collaboration between Giger, Harry, and Blondie guitarist Chris Stein—the three also made music videos for a couple of the songs and even cooked up a cover feature for Heavy Metal.

DangerousMinds has done a bang-up job reporting on another collaboration, this one Giger and Stein: The “Gigerstein” one-of-a-kind guitar. Actually, DangerousMinds concludes that it was mainly Chris Stein and Thomas Lieber of Lieber Guitars designing the thing based on Giger’s style, with some input from Giger along the way.

What’s cool is that there are pictures of the Gigerstein; what’s not so cool is that they are so small. But here you go:

The Gigerstein is neat, but an oddity that hardly anyone has ever heard of. More accessible, perhaps, is the line of official H.R. Giger guitars produced by Ibanez:

But the most famous bit of rock hardware Giger designed is undoubtedly the microphone stand he made for Jonathan Davis of Korn. Davis actually uses it in concert, and in a sense it’s the most authentically Giger of all these things. Rather than a functional object that’s been Giger-ized, it’s really more like a Giger sculpture to which one can attach a microphone.

“He told me I had complete freedom to design the microphone stand as I wanted and his only concern was that it had be totally functional and as movable as possible. He also wanted it be Biomechanical and very erotic.” —H.R. Giger on Jonathan Davis’s mic stand
