The new Shudder series Blood Machines has been on Heavy Metal’s radar for awhile — perhaps because everyone sees the spirit of Heavy Metal and Metal Hurlant in it:

“We’ve got a crazy new trailer for you to watch for an awesome looking Heavy Metal style sci-fi space opera called Blood Machines.” —GeekTyrant

“The lead ship’s AI looks like the robot from Metropolis mixed with a tribal fertility doll. If Nicholas Winding Refn directed a big-budget Heavy Metal movie, it might look something like this.” —The Spool

Blood Machines‘ real strength lies in its cinematic realization of Metal Hurlant‘s sex and spaceships visual aesthetics.” —BeyondChron

“Let me tell you something – if we *ever* get a Heavy Metal 2.0 reboot in anthology format, [Blood Machines directors] Hernandez and Joly-Gonfard better get the call.” —Slashfilm

Ok, so our ears have been burning all this time, and it’s good to finally see the thing. You’ll have to sign up for Shudder to witness it yourself, but in the meantime here are three trailers:

So… how is it? Visually, it’s stunning — these filmmakers push us into sensory overload early, and don’t let up. The plot is a little hard to follow, although some of the early head-scratchers are wrapped up by the end. It’s sexy, and we wouldn’t be Heavy Metal if we didn’t approve of the artistically-deployed gratuitous nudity. And it’s the kind of clip that portends brilliance to follow. You won’t regret watching it — we sure don’t.

  1. To me Heavy Metal will and should always be animated. That’s why I didnt really care for Metal Hurlant. I do love Love Death & Robots though.

  2. I watched all 3 episodes on shudder. It was pretty bizarre. I dug the 80’s style art and sound. Although it was very much inspired by Heavy Metal, here can never be another Heavy Metal.

  3. You do not like old school space trash? – sit and learn, nerds!
The style of the VHS era is a huge cultural stratum in the life of mankind, conditionally beginning in the late 70s and ending (especially in Russia) in the early 90s. The style is ideologically connected with the protest counterculture of the 60s, but at the same time it is a unique phenomenon for history. It includes such distinctive and unique phenomena as for example the “cartoon for adults” “Heavy Metal” 1981 with erotic comic aesthetics and its ideological successor and successor to “The Fifth Element” by Luc Besson. Fantastic neon noir of the future from Blade Runner (a visual embodiment of the work of Phillip Dick also from the 60s – “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” – This is 1968). Numerous “Robocops”, “Terminators”, fantastic sagas and cosmo-operas – this is also a “theme of the 80s.”
The whole project is a real visual and musical feast for aesthetes. The visual range is not just good – it is gorgeous, in the best neon traditions of the 80s, but taking into account modern technologies and graphics.
If you are looking for a plot and scenario basis here, then this project is not for you, without a doubt Although, of course, we will attribute this sample to the classic genre of “sy-fi” with elements of “space opera”.
Music – Retrowave aka synthwave immerses you in an ocean of passion and burning erotic fantasies, expands your consciousness and at the same time makes you think about the soul. About a machines metal soul.

    With metal greetings from Russia
