Big event going down tonight in Los Angeles, in case you haven’t heard — Meltdown Comics (7522 Sunset Blvd.) is hosting a Jack Kirby blacklight art-stravaganza! Here’s the scoop:
• Blacklight prints of Barry Geller & Jack Kirby’s Lord of Light will be on display. These prints have been colored by Mark Englert and appear on the cover and in the pages of the current issue of Heavy Metal (#276).
• Two full sets of Lord of Light prints — each set being 14 images — will be on sale at the store. These are the last two full sets of these prints in existence.
• Barry Geller himself, Kirby’s collaborator on the Lord of Light and Science Fiction Land projects, will be there signing issues of Heavy Metal #276 and prints.
There’s much more to the event, though. Mega-fanboy institution Nerdist (Chris Hardwick’s empire) is sending over some of its writers to discuss Kirby and anything else relevant. That’ll be a gas, and it starts at 8 PM. Following the discussion, the tables and chairs will be whisked away and the blacklights will be turned on. Those present will bask in the glowing excellence of the Geller/Kirby/Englert Lord of Light prints, as well as new blacklight works by super-cool artists Skinner, Dirty Donny, and KRK Ryden.
There will be drinks, there will be music. The spirit of the late Jack “King” Kirby will be present, and, we hope, pleased at the epic display.
That’s the long and short of it, although you’re welcome to read essentially the same information on the Meltdown Comics blog.
Below are some related images. Thanks to co-curator Quang Le for posting these on his Instagram page, which is likely to have as-it-happens pictures from the event, so check it out if you can’t make it to Meltdown. (Speaking of not making it to Meltdown, we’ll remind you that some Lord of Light pritns are available in the Heavy Metal shop.):
