A new trailer for the live-action Attack on Titan movie has been released, and in it we see a bit more of the fearsome Titans, crazy human-eating giants who’ve been walled away for years. The Colossal Titan, the huge skinless guy, gets the ball rolling by breaching the wall, and the game is on. Soon enough, hideous giants, naked but lacking genitals, are wreaking havoc in the city’s streets.
While this trailer looks ridiculously cool to us (as did the first one), fans of the manga and anime are already complaining. Brian Ashcraft at Kotaku says “things get bad, dumb, and out of character” in this trailer, mainly because two of the main characters who aren’t romantically involved in the source material are shown kissing. Fair enough, but it’s hard to imagine a movie about masses of people facing certain and grisly death without some hint of disaster sex. It’s just how movies work.
Others are criticizing the look of the film, saying that the reveals of the titans were better in the anime and manga.
To see where they’re coming from, here are the first appearances of the Colossal Titan, Armored Titan, Female Titan, and Berserker Titan, who are all “abnormal” titans—bigger and more intelligent than the rank and file titans:
Whether the movie (a two-part extravaganza) ultimately succeeds in capturing the spirit of the 70 (and counting)-chapter manga remains to be seen, but you can see why this saga has become so hugely popular in Japan.
