We’ve seen the “teaser” trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road, and we’ve seen the similar-but-different international trailer. Yesterday, Warner Bros. released what they’re calling the “Official Main Trailer,” and it’s got a bunch of new stuff in it. The previous videos really concentrated on the zooming madness of a high-speed chase across the desert, with some shots of other parts of the movie to be sure. This one, though, gives us a few more hints about the world and circumstances in which the action is set. It begins with Max, chained and gagged, being chased (on foot) by Immortan Joe’s henchmen; we see Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron, we’d recognize that neck anywhere) branded; we see Joe’s army cheering their leader on; we see Max in a cage; we see Joe entering a room through a massive safe-like door only to find that “they” are gone. We’ve learned from our rigorous Google research that “they” are five women known as “The Wives,” and their ranks include Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (of Victoria’s Secret fame) and Zoe Kravitz (Lenny’s daughter). Although the world of Fury Road is generally afflicted by a shortage of fuel, one must think that for Immortan Joe these Wives are perhaps even more valuable than gasoline. That would explain the comically thick and impenetrable door behind which they are stashed (note also the chastity belt, above, with teeth on it—Joe reeeeally doesn’t like to share) and the extravagant fuel-burning chase that ensues when he wants them back.
Here’s the trailer; release date is May 15:
