This Friday the 13th of November we bring you cosplayer Abby Dark-Star as Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th horror movies. Except Jason never really looked like this—strictly speaking, Abby’s outfit is based on a Kotobukiya statuette of Jason. Still, you’ve got a hockey mask, machete, blood—it’s a Jason of some sort. We asked Abby—find her on Facebook, Instagram, DeviantArt and her own official site—about this epic creation.
What’s your history with horror movies and Friday the 13th‘s Jason in particular? Horror fan or not so much?
I’m a huge scaredy cat, and didn’t have much exposure to horror growing up. As an adult, I’m rediscovering these classics for a first time and using costumes like Jason to help me overcome my fears.
How did you pick Jason as a subject, and what were your thoughts during the planning stages? Did you enjoy the challenge, or were you like — what the hell am I doing?
I was approached by my friend JoJo, who asked if I wanted to join her group, I loved Jason’s look, and the different of the aspects of the costume that I would be creating. For me, the challenge is most of the fun. Bringing something that is clearly not based in reality, into reality!
How did horror fans react to your Jason?
There were, of course, the people who thought it was a travesty to the character of Jason Voorhees, but they didn’t know the context for the figure that Kotobukiya created. Once they were informed, many were very positive.
Your Jason costume was a big success — do you have your sights set on any other horror characters?
I always have my eye out for a design that captures my interest. Right now I’m into gothic inspired looks. Crimson Peak-inspired for instance.
What cosplays do you have in the planning stages now?
Currently I am working on a Sideshow version of Red Sonja. This costume is taking over my life as everything on it will be crafted by me. From the leather boots to the cape. We even had custom aluminum cut into the very specific chain mail shapes! Our next convention is Wizard World Reno, November 20-22nd.
What’s your dream cosplay — if you had infinite time/money/materials, what character would you create?
I’d want to do a huge suit of armor, like a jaeger from Pacific Rim!
