First of all, don’t blame us. You clicked the link.
Bill Sienkiewicz is one of those guys you always want to check on—for decades now, he’s been pushing the boundaries of comics art and illustration. On May 7, his latest project went live, and to date it’s been downloaded 724,300 times.
It’s called H8 Society: How an Atomic Fart Saved the World, and it’s a fairly massive collaboration—written by a duo called 2Dans, illustrated by Sienkiewicz, and soundtracked with 26 songs from indie music acts hailing from nine different countries.
But, hrrrm, that title—is it really about a fart? Indeed it is. Sienkiewicz explained his reasoning to ComicsAlliance:
2Dans came to me with the simple idea of the nuclear fart [and] I thought that it was so out of left field. Y’know, on the one hand, you have the higher aspirations of art, and music, and the mixing of the various media – and then you had something that was just so hysterical from a very young point of view, that it was like, “Oh, this is going to confuse so many people, this is great, let’s just run with this and see what’s possible!”
So to me, this project has got the whole gamut of highbrow to lowbrow, and that’s the perfect embodiment of what I think we can try for in the medium.
Maybe you’ll like the highbrow-lowbrow thing, maybe you won’t—only way to find out is to download the free bundle via BitTorrent and load it onto your mobile device:
Sienkiewicz’s art, as always, is over-the-top and unique—you know, this whole thing is kinda crazy but it just might work. Here are some samples from the project’s Instagram page:
