All This and Much, Much (Grant) Morrison: Heavy Metal 280 Previewed!

And so begins the Grant Morrison Era at Heavy Metal.

And so begins the Grant Morrison Era at Heavy Metal.

Heavy Metal #280 is here! This is the much ballyhooed, and deservedly so, debut issue for our new Editor in Chief, Mr. Grant Morrison. Within its pages you will find a blast of excellently illustrated, maddeningly mind-bending tales by Heavy Metal regulars and debutantes. It’s all kicked off with an editor’s note that is an unprocessed, unfiltered slice of Morrison’s brain, that comics fountain from whence sprung The Invisibles, Flex Mentallo, The Filth, and a host of name-brand stuff (Superman, X-Men, JLA, etc.).

Here are all three covers and a sampling of interior pages from this landmark issue, which is on newsstands now and available in our online shop—enjoy!

Hey, just got my #280 today…
Wow, definitely a lot more content than recent issues. Is that only because of new Editor In Chief, or can we expect 130+ pages in upcoming issues?

I love, love, love the short stories, and self contained pieces. Long story arcs are not my thing.
Loved the gallery too. I couldn’t believe how art from the turn of the last century is indistinguishable from today’s art.

Loved issue 280, but also wanted to thank you for the recent horror issue, which is still my favorite.
Thanks and keep up the good work!

  2. S says:

Would you credit the artist responsible for the portraits of Grant Morrison in the issue? I’d like to see more of their work and it seems odd not to have it credited on the webpage. Thanks.

  3. R says:

Just wanted to give a bit of input. “The Boring Sequential Story” is complete garbage in this issue and feels like it really doesn’t belong. Everything else I’ve read so far is fine though. No idea why it was included as it appears to be an ironically bad comic that’s full of typos and shitty memes and just exists to be awful and dumb. Heavy Metal is better than this.

    • agreed that was complete shit. I was like, WTF reading it. awful. art and story was retarded. I felt cheated on this issue – The Key was the only thing that saved it

  4. Brian Parrish says:

Please Mr. Grant, please bring heavy metal back to its former glory. For far too long this great magazine has been dumbed down and PC out. For years this magazine has been poly bag like it was pornography all the while hardly showing any nudity or coarse language worse than any R-rated movie. If you are truly serious about bringing this magazine back to its greatness please remember to include the sensuality and the explosiveness that made this a great adult comic magazine. Hopefully you have the pull to bring in the best talent and the best work from those artists and writers to make heavy metal great again.

  5. This issue was really bad. The Sequential Story was awful. Salsa was bad too, can’t believe that is gonna run for a few more issues. Crap. Fiends was stupid. The only thing that really saved this issue was The Key & the are in Goddesss ( the story was kinda lame ). – but honestly this was a WTF issue. not happy.
