| WHAT'S
ON MY BRAIN: Sunday, October 23, 2005 |
Hey
Guys,
Long time no me. No worries, trust me I've been busy--all cool stuff I'll
get to tell you about soon. Working on MOVIE shit.
Which brings me to what I wanted to write about this week. Movies. Here's
eleven movies I've watched on DVD recently I wanted to share my thoughts
on with you. Maybe some of them you might want to check out yourself. |
1.)
"Ong Bak--the Tai Warrior!" Cool. Killer stunts, he does them
all himself, some really holy shit kinda stuff. Love the fact they show
the best ones twice. The story we've all seen before, but worth a look.
More info at www.foxhome.com. |
2.)
"Neo Tokyo!" Classic re-release of Anime shorts by Maruyama,
Kawajiri, and Otomo. Amazing animation, great ideas, in short form that
shows why these guys are some of the coolest directors of our time--Anime
Style. Also worth a look. More info at www.adtfilms.com. |
3.)
"The Getaway!" What more do I have to say than Steve McQueen
and Ali MacGraw directed by Sam Peckinpah? Genius film, one of the ones
that made McQueen the Dude of Dudes. Forget about the shitty remake, this
one is a must have for your DVD collection. More info at www.warnervideo.com. |
4.)
"Kung Fu Hustle!" Stephen Chow fucking rules. I loved his first
effort 'Sholin Soccer" and this one is even better. A killer combination
between Jackie Chan and a Tex Avery/Chuck Jones cartoon--the story is
brutal, but extremely funny. I miss so many movies at the theater but
this is one I wish I caught there. This one I've watched more than "Kung
Pow" More info at www.sonyclassics.com. |
5.)
"Eternal Gaze!" A film by Sam Chen, inspired by the artist Alberto
Giacometti--was originally shown at the 2003 Siggraph conference, and
has been kicking ass award wise ever since. Although the film itself is
only sixteen minutes long the DVD has bonus features that run another
hour plus. Weird, cool, informative, and something I'm glad I have as
part of my collection. More info at www.eternalgaze.com. |
6.)
"Suicide Girls-The First Tour!" What can I say…loved it.
Goth girls mostly naked, doing a killer burlesque show to kick ass music?
Love it. They've gotten huge world wide, and will continue to do so. Looking
forward to seeing them live, but in the mean time this is a great filler.
For all the info and tour information go to www.suicidegirls.com. |
7.)
"Immortal!" European artist god and Heavy Metal (the early years)
regular. Love his artwork, love his stories, and love that he's evolved
to directing and doing his own visions in animation, combined with live
action. Loved it--many may think the story moves slow, and the story is
a bit hard to understand--but that is pretty much like allot of the comics
I run in the mag. Love to know what you guys think of this one. For more
info go to www.firstlookmedia.com. |
8.)
"Tae Guk Gi-The Brotherhood of War!" Most excellent Korean war
film. Reminded me of a combination of "Saving Private Ryan"
and "Wind Talkers"-- but more on the "Wind Talkers"
side. Battle scenes are graphic, and out of control, but they drag on
allot John Woo style. If you like war films like I do this is a great
one to add to the shelf. For more info go to www.sonypictures.com/taegukgi. |
9.)
"Kekko Kamen!" Japanese school girl gets abused and beaten and
then becomes a mostly naked super hero. Brought to us by the great folks
at "Tokyo Shock" this film is a blast--and even more fun to
watch with the sound turned down--and you make up your own voices and
story! A must have? YES! For more infor go to www.media-blasters.com. |
10.)
"Old Boy!" Anything I could tell you about this one wouldn't
do it justice. "15 years of Imprisonment…5 Days of Justice"
is the tag line on the bottom of the box and you better believe it. I've
added it to on of my favorite films of all time--but keep in mind I have
a weird taste. Love to here comments from anybody else that has seen it.
For more info go to www.media-blasters.com. |
11.)
"Downfall!" Subtitled which I hate because I have to really
plan the time to sit and watch it, so I can really see it all, and for
this one I'm glad I did. Basically it is about Hitlers final days, but
the acting and directing--and the visuals are more than top shelf. If
you like this kind of "History Channel" topic, this film will
blow you away! For more info go to www.sonypictures.com. |

Okay--so that is it for my film thoughts, (kev's video collection) and
I will do this again sometime--it was fun.
Next week I'll catch you all up on new projects and what my dogs have
been up to.
All the best, Kevin
