Warner Bros. has released yet another video for the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road—this time, it’s the “international trailer,” which means that it has cool Japanese text on it. It is slightly different from previous trailers, but the gist is the same: cobbled-together deathmobiles racing across the desert bent on destruction but powerless before a category-10 haboob. While the action is gripping and the scenery beautifully bleak (looks like someone has been consulting back issues of Heavy Metal, actually), it’s the characters that stay with you—and we’re not talking about the good guy. These are some fierce homicidal freaks, reminding us (as they should, given this film’s ancestry) of films from a previous era when the post-apocalyptic threat wasn’t zombies or aliens or giant insects but humans. Seriously desperate and ruthless humans. Humans who have lost their humanity.
