Krystopher Sapp: Assemblist of the Macabre

Metropolis

Metropolis

By Frank Forte

I had the pleasure of meeting Krystopher Sapp at his opening at The La Luz De Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, CA in 2014. Krys’ assemblages have a dark and twisted feel that are sure to attract collectors of the macabre. Krys is constantly working and creating new pieces and recently made the transition to full-time artist. Let’s hope he keeps bringing us further into his demented world!

Krys’ most recent work was part of the Conjoined V showing which was curated by Chet Zar and held at the Copro Gallery (in Santa Monica, CA). It opened January 24th, 2015 and ran until February 14th. Krys says it was an amazing show and packed from the get go. Many great artists were in attendance, like Erick de la Vega , Jason Andrew Hite , Bruce D. Mitchell and David Richardson. Krys’ latest worked (at Conjoined 5) is entitled Metropolis.

Metropolis is beautiful,” explains Krys, “I really didn’t get a chance to see her from far away because I was up so close while working on the piece, but in the end, I achieved my goal. I wanted to show something beautiful, but dark, and I found it in Metropolis; a huge city sprawl, with monolithic figures towering, looming over those who reside in it.”

Krys is currently working on a series based on film. His Das Boot and Clockwork Orange pieces will be completed very soon. He explains that the list of projects is “kinda endless”, and he’s going to be secretive about most of his work until it’s unveiled to the public. Krys says, “I’m going back to adding mystery to my work. It sounds selfish, but I want people to be amazed.”

Krys did attend some art school but dropped out due to burnout. Most of his time is spent trying to improve his skills by self-teaching and studying the processes of other artists. Krys is a big fan of miniature work, and spends most of his time painting military miniatures or fantasy type figures.

Krys has a personal drive to create material that is based more in horror and dark subject matter. At a very early age, he was exposed to horror films and posters because his family runs a collectable movie poster and toy business that he grew up with and helped run. The artist says he’s pretty much a nerd at heart.

Krys states that he’s been very lucky to have his work featured in art galleries on both coasts. Some of these galleries include: LA LUZ DE JESUS, COPRO GALLERY, HYAENA GALLERY, NIGHT GALLERY CERAMICS.

For upcoming shows in 2015, Krys has a small group show in March in Arizona and a few towards the fall.

Krys’ artwork is typically comprised of assemblage, where he takes found or purchased objects and transforms them into art. The biggest challenge for him is building cities or cityscapes. He says those are the most fun, looming monstrous buildings with a foreboding doom. To Krys, it all has a story to tell.

“Yes, my work does tend to glorify darkness or dark tones,” Krys explains, “but what I’m trying to convey is a sense of longing of all things old, making them feel somewhat magical, if not simply embracing the antiquity of the artifacts of my work.”

As for commercial work, Krys has done that too. When he’s not building, he’s sketching – most of his line work has graced numerous posters for punk  and psychobilly shows. Krys has created posters for such bands as THE DAMNED, ADOLESCENTS, 45GRAVE, DEMENTED ARE GO, NEKROMANTIX, METEORS and ZOMBIE GHOST TRAIN.

Krys has had his fine artwork used in videos as well. MORBID ANGEL used his work in their “Existo Vulgore” video and SOULFLYS used works in their “World Scum” video. Other videos where Krys’ work appears are: DREAMING DEAD and KILLER BE KILLED.

“Give me your wretched, your disillusioned, and forgotten. For in the shadow of darkness they will stand in my light. For I am the builder, the architect, their creator. They shall be built from my light.” – Krystopher Sapp
