82-Year-Old Nichelle Nichols Is Signed Up for a NASA Mission

Nichelle Nichols

In a Reddit AmA chat on Thursday, Nichelle Nichols, famous as Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek series, announced she’ll be going up into very thin air:

In September, I’m traveling on a NASA SOFIA flight, a second generation Airborn Observatory, which I am honored to have been invited too. I’ll be streaming as much from that as I can on StarPower as well!

SOFIA isn’t a rocket, and Nichelle won’t get into outer space. SOFIA, Nichols said, is “a massive telescope mounted inside a 747 flying as high as is possible.”

The woman is 82, and had a stroke on June 3 — upper atmosphere is good enough.
