WHAT'S ON MY BRAIN: Saturday, September 17, 2005

I don't know about you guys, but I miss most movies at the theater and end up watching them on DVD. I know, or at least I think I've spoken about that here a bunch of times--or on the message boards when I used to have time to get up there and chat with you all. I just watched "Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" and found it kinda fun. I think Sam Rockwell is a pretty good actor (one of his first movie speaking lines was in TMNT #1 movie) and the rest of the cast was pretty strong. Neat effects, but I'm glad I saw it on DVD instead of at the movies.

I also saw "Kung Fu Hustle" recently, well a month or so back, and thought that was genius. I'd put it on my recommend list to you all.

It is Saturday night almost midnight right now, I spent a very productive day working on the "Underwhere" script (A kids thing I created almost 20 years ago) with my friend Robert Mandel. Have been revamping it with a great bunch of talent besides Robert, like Paul Jenkins who I worked with originally on it with, and my best pal Joe Pearson. What's to come of it? We will see, but fun to be back working on it again.

For traveling adventures, I'm pretty sure in an earlier note I told you I went to the "Wizard Comic Convention" in Chicago, which was a hoot, but the best part was I got to hang with the gang at Echo Gallery who put on another Heavy Metal style show and party during the show. We'd planned ahead to pick one of their AMAZING local artists to pick from the show and put on the back cover of the magazine as the winner. Well we have a winner, Ken Keirns! Congratulations! If you want to see more from the event, go to the www.EchoGallery.org and check out the photo section.

Photo number one is from the show, the lovely Veronika (we're going to do her art book next year) the winner Ken, Me, and Echo Gallery co-founder Derek. Image two is the painting that I chose as the winner. Great job Ken, and he's got a ton more stuff even cooler than this.
Next up on the cool picture list this time around, is one by Luis Royo of Julie's sister Lizzy. Over the 2004 San Diego Convention, the whole team from Norma, Royo, Rafa, and Oscar came up to LA to hang out for an afternoon, and took the time to take shot reference photos of Julie and Lizzy for upcoming paintings, and this is the first out of the box on Lizzy. I'm sure it will show up as a Heavy Metal cover or poster in the near future.

This next one I love, Veronika from Echo sent me this, an artist friend of hers did his concept of a Ninja Turtle! Man is it cool! She didn't send his name along, and I couldn't get it in time before writing this, so I'll be sure to get it for you next time. This guy is great.
The next six images are a sneak preview of a project I've been trying to get the rights to do for near 8 years. As some of you may know my wife worked for Penthouse and was Penthouse Pet of the Year in 1993. What allot of you don't know is for each of the 12 layouts she did for the magazine, they would shoot like 300 plus photos, but only print less than 20 per layout in the issue she would feature in--that means there was about 290 photos never used, and never before seen. Not only that--there were two layouts never printed. Cool beans.
Thanks to the GREAT folks that bought Penthouse two years ago I was able to close a deal and get unlimited access to all the shoots and photos to put together "The Ultimate Julie Strain Penthouse Collection!" What was even cooler is I was able to get the deal finalized, and present the give of this project to Julie on our tenth anniversary this past August.

If you’re a serious Julie Strain fan or have no clue of who she is, this will be a killer 200 page plus book available next spring. I'll do a few more previews for you before then.

Okay, I'm going to call it a night, I've got more writing to do, and e-mails to get on top of tonight--hoping to spend a little downtime playing with the dogs in the yard tomorrow so I need to get my work done tonight.

I'll be talking to you soon.

Best, Kevin
