WHAT’S
ON MY BRAIN
Okay, so
here we go, it is Saturday night, I’m trying to finish up a ton
of work and pack for Japan. I’m off for a week to work with MAD
HOUSE ANIMATION, now for not only "Ninja Scroll," "Vampire
Hunter D," "Trigun," "Perfect Blue," but a
ton of other killer assed projects! We’re putting together a series
of projects, animated of course, and I hope to be able to share good
news with you once I return. More to come.
It’s been a crazy week around here otherwise, working on the next
issue of the magazine, Julie’s new book, Simon’s new "Bible"
book, and a few dozen other things I’ll get to share with you
in the coming weeks.
One of the coolest things going on with me is quitting smoking. I have
smoked for about 15 years, and quit for four and a half, then about
a year ago, being an idiot, I took one drag and was back on the tar
again for nearly a year. I don’t know about you, but for me it’s
all or nothing, and all it took was one drag. I hope none of you smoke,
but if you do, being a guy that hates it as much as I love it quit if
you can.

Had a great
visit from my good friend, and Heavy Metal cover artist Gil Bruvel this
past week, it had been way to long since we had a chance for a proper
visit. He’s living in Maui now, and if you can’t recall his
work, check out his link on the Heavy Metal links page. Regardless, me
him and Lorenzo Sperlonga did some free style painting, and got more on
our face than the boards. (picture one) A good time had by all, as you
can see. |
Lots
of rumors and stories about the crazy things I did in the glory days of
the TMNT’s, one was that I owned a TANK. (Image two) It’s
true, I owned a M15A Stuart Light tank, my favorite tank from the "G.I.
Combat—Haunted " series DC put out. Man, loved those Kubert
covers, and Russ Heath stories—when they got to them. I bought it
from a company in Hollywood that provides this kind of hardware to studio
pictures, in fact the last time this tank was used was in the movie "Red
Dawn." I sold it to a museum about four years ago, and still miss
it. |
The other
one was that I owned the "Bat Mobile" from the 1989 film,
that is also true. (Picture three is of it being unloaded in Northampton)
In my peak days of the TMNT’s funding the museum I built for
"Comic Art" I had hoped that if I built it they would come.
Many did, and I wished it had been enough to keep it going, as I miss
it very much, as well as the people that poured their hearts into
it to make it work, unfortunately it didn’t. However, I did
buy the "Bat Mobile" which was intended to be one of the
exhibits, but when the funding to the museum ran short, I sold it
to another museum, to keep mine open for a few months longer. |
Images
five and six are from the Marilyn Manson art exhibit Julie and I went
to last year—I’ve been chasing after him to try to get him
to run a gallery of his "way cool" artworks in the magazine,
and I think he’s bending my way. I’ll keep you posted as to
when that might run, and I have to tell you, honestly, the guy is a real
talent, the work shows great skill, and he’s our kind of artist.
The pic’s are of me and Julie (don’t make fun of my Hollywood
shades, it was just a faze I was going through) and of the man himself,
and his lovely friend, model, "Dita". |

Over the last year I have had a number of chats with my dear friend
Bob "Flaming Carrot" Burden, about getting him to do some
more work in Heavy Metal, and he’s finally agreed. "Flaming
Carrot" is like 30 years old this year, and we talked about doing
something special, and have come up with him expanding a bunch of his
classic stories we’ll reprint in the mag in full color. More news
on when all this will go down in coming weeks, but it will happen in
2004, so stay tuned. Image six is of Bob and one of Julie’s favorite
model Arban (see the Heavy Metal 2000 DVD for more of her) posing in
our back yard. Bob is one of my oldest, and best friends in comics,
under rated by far, and a true comic genius. If you haven’t read
any of his work, do so, and if you haven’t read it in a while,
read it again. Killer.

On other fronts, all new updates for the various sites this week, lots
of new items added to the store, and I’d hoped to get the winner
of the "Name the chick from Fistfull of Blood" contest answered
before Japan, but I’m still waiting for Bisley feed back, so you’ll
have to wait another week.
Okay, I gotta pack and sleep…more fun and news soon.
Best, Kevin
